Abstract
This reflection paper critically examines the filmmaker's experience in creating 'Zero-hour worker(s),' titled "the Pandaboy" a short film focused on the lives of gig workers. It delves into the challenges and insights gained during the two-days filmmaking process in Karachi, utilizing an anthropological approach to interpret the socio-economic realities of these workers. The paper highlights the difficulties encountered during filming, including safety concerns and the complexities of participant engagement, alongside reflections on the iterative editing process that shaped the final film.
Methodology
This research applies documentary practices to anthropological inquiry, employing observational and interview techniques to capture the experiences of gig workers. The methodology involved direct engagement with individuals, including a key interview with Abdullah, a former delivery boy, to gather personal narratives and insights into their lives. The author also utilized point-of-view (POV) filming and b-roll footage to document the working environment, adapting unique methods due to practical and safety constraints during the filmming.
